How the Breeding Chain Engine Works: BFS Graph Traversal & CombiRank

Palworld contains over 18,700 valid breeding combinations across 137+ base species and variant subspecies. When viewed mathematically, every Pal is a node in an interconnected graph, and every valid pairing forms a directed edge leading to an offspring node.

Our pathfinder executes a Breadth-First Search (BFS) algorithm outward from your owned Palbox inventory:

Generation 1 (Direct)

The engine checks if any two Pals in your Palbox can breed the target Pal directly. If yes, the chain terminates immediately at Step 1 (Cost: 1 Cake).

Generation 2 (1 Intermediate)

If no direct pair exists, the algorithm evaluates all intermediate offspring that can be bred from your inventory, testing if they can mate with an owned Pal to hatch the target.

Generation 3+ (Deep Chain)

For restricted starter-only inventories, the BFS traverses multi-tier lineages, guaranteeing the mathematically absolute shortest path with zero redundant steps.

πŸ’‘ CombiRank Progression: Every generation step averages the parents' hidden breeding powers: Math.floor((Parent A + Parent B + 1) / 2). Breeding a low-rank powerhouse (like Relaxaurus, Rank 280) with a starter (like Sparkit, Rank 1110) rapidly bridges the power gap to mid-tier titans like Anubis (Rank 480).

Minimizing Cake Costs & Retaining Universal Stepping-Stone Pals

Every generation step in a breeding tree requires exactly 1 Cake inside the Breeding Farm chest to produce an egg. A 2-generation tree consumes 2 Cakes minimum, while an unoptimized 4-generation route wastes 4+ Cakes and hours of breeding farm time.

Universal Stepping-Stone Pals

Certain Pals possess unique graph centrality in Palworld breeding data. Keeping a breeding pair of each of the following Pals in your Palbox unlocks over 65% of all endgame species in 2 steps or less:

  • Penking (#011) β€” Universal early water connector
  • Mossanda (#033) β€” Essential mid-tier grass bridge
  • Rayhound (#060) β€” Key electric catalyst
  • Relaxaurus (#085) β€” Heavy dragon parent for Astegon/Anubis/Orserk

Managing 50/50 Gender Ratios

Because offspring have a 50% chance of being male or female, prepare 2 to 3 Cakes for intermediate stepping-stone steps. This ensures you obtain the correct opposite gender to mate with the next parent in the chain without stopping production.

Palworld Breeding Tree Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Authoritative answers on breeding chains, BFS pathfinding, and Cake minimization

01.What is the shortest breeding tree to get Anubis from starter Pals?β–Ό

The shortest route from basic starter Pals requires just 2 generations: Step 1: Breed Celaray (#007) with Eikthyrdeer (#032) to produce Melpaca. Step 2: Breed that Melpaca with a captured Relaxaurus (#085) to produce Anubis (#100). Alternatively, if you have caught the Level 23 Bushi boss and Level 15 Penking boss, you can produce Anubis directly in 1 generation (Penking + Bushi -> Anubis).

02.How does the breeding chain calculator find the fastest route?β–Ό

The tool treats every Pal species as a node in an interconnected graph containing all 18,700+ combinations. Using a Breadth-First Search (BFS) pathfinding algorithm, it traverses outward from the Pals marked as 'Owned' in your Palbox, finding the route with the fewest intermediate generations to your target Pal to minimize breeding cycles and Cakes.

03.How many Cakes do I need to complete a multi-generation breeding tree?β–Ό

Under optimal conditions, you need 1 Cake per generation step in the chain. A 2-step breeding chain requires a minimum of 2 Cakes (1 Cake for intermediate child, 1 Cake for target Pal). We recommend baking 2 to 4 Cakes per step to account for 50/50 male and female gender probabilities.

04.Can Legendary Pals like Jetragon, Frostallion, and Paladius be bred using breeding trees?β–Ό

No. In Palworld game data, pure Legendary Pals (Jetragon, Frostallion, Paladius, Necromus) can only be bred by pairing two identical parents of the same species. They cannot be produced by cross-breeding different species. However, once captured, they can be cross-bred downward through a breeding tree to pass the Legend trait to other Pals.

05.What happens if my Palbox inventory doesn't contain a valid route to my target Pal?β–Ό

If no path is found with your currently selected inventory, the tool alerts you that additional intermediate species are needed. You can expand your inventory by selecting the Early Game (#1-#25) preset or capturing key universal stepping-stone Pals like Penking, Cinnamoth, Mossanda, or Relaxaurus, which instantly unlock thousands of new multi-generation pathways.

06.Does my marked Palbox inventory save automatically?β–Ό

Yes. Your marked inventory automatically saves to your browser's local storage in real-time. You can also export a JSON backup file to transfer your inventory across multiple devices (such as PC and Steam Deck) or share it with guildmates.

07.What is the difference between this Breeding Tree and the standard Breeding Calculator?β–Ό

The standard Breeding Calculator (/) is a 1-step direct lookup tool: you choose two parents to see what they produce, or select a child to see its direct parent combinations. The Breeding Tree (/tree), by contrast, is a multi-generation pathfinder: it looks at your entire inventory of owned Pals and maps out a full multi-step genealogical chain (Step 1 -> Step 2 -> Step 3) to reach Pals you do not yet own with the absolute fewest breeding steps possible.
